The Celtics established one of the best-known rivalries in professional basketball with the Los Angeles Lakers.

In 1946, the Celtics became the part of Basketball Association of America. With the merger of BAA and NBL, the Celtics drafted center Ed Macauley and rookie Bob Cousy and Bill Sharman. In 1956, with the acquisition of rookie Bill Russell, the team witnessed their overnight triumph. The Celtics defeated the St. Louis Hawks in 1957 and marked their first appearance in the NBA championship. In the 1958-59 season, the Celtics trampled the Lakers and became the victorious holder of the NBA championship. In 1960s, the Lakers and Celtics encountered each other in six more NBA Finals. From 1960 to 1966, the Celtics were coached by Auerbach. He polished the talents of Cousy, Havlicek, Tom Heinsohn, Frank Ramsey, Russell, and Sharman. They all became the key players of the club and ruled the playoffs with their distinctive styles. Auerbach retired after the 1966 victory over the Lakers. Russell took over as player-coach, becoming the first black head coach in major league pro sports.

In 1970s, the Celtics entered a new era. The players who played the dominant role were Dave Cowens, Paul Silas, and Jo Jo White. The club earned its 13th NBA crown in 1976 by defeating the Phoenix Suns. The Celtics upgraded themselves following the 13 th victory. With the attainment of Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale, the Celtics made 5 NBA appearances in 1980s. K.C. Jones became the head coach. The challenge between the Celtics and the Lakers and between Bird and Lakers Magic Johnson also invigorated professional basketball. The Lakers lost the NBA championship to the Lakers in 1985. In the 1990s the Celtics did not rule the pro basketball due to the retirement of Bird and demise of Reggie Lewis due to heart failure. In 1994-95, the Celtics moved to their new home arena, FleetCenter.
