According to the Irish mythology a leprechaun is a type of mythical creature which was a race of minor gods of nature and fertility. These creatures are often depicted as small, youthful men and women possessing spectacular beauty. They also have been imagined as immortal and are also known for their magical powers. A few Irish people still believe in the existence of leprechauns but for most of them they are an attractive piece of art form that adds to the beauty and exquisiteness of Ireland .
According to the myth Leprechaun sightings occur most frequently in the areas of fairy forts. By nature the leprechaun loves to stay alone. He mends the shoes and makes the stout coarse shoe that was worn formerly in Ireland and the Scottish Highlands .

Even their name literally means "one shoe maker." In appearance a leprechaun looks like an old lilliputian no larger than three feet . .He wears a cocked hat, a woolen waistcoat, knee length snuggling short pants, apron, long stockings and silver -buckled stout coarse shoes. They spot a beard and are usually pipe smokers. In the contemporary time, leprechauns are shown wearing emerald colored green frock coats. It is believed that they are aware of the location of the hidden treasure. If they are caught, they do reveal the location of the treasure but are a hard nut to crack. They are also the mischievous fellows with a great liking for Celtic music and sports. They are cunning and are full of examples. Once, a farmer forced him to reveal the location of buried treasure. The leprechaun told him that the treasure was buried in an open field beneath a plant. As a mark of identification, the farmer tied a red colored cloth to the plant and left to get a shovel. As soon he came back he found that all the weeds in the field had been tied with identical red cloths. Leprechauns are also known as the defenders of the fairies.
